CSTA is pleased to once again collaborate with Ten Strands to bring you the California Science Education Conference Climate Summit. This event was introduced last year at the 2018 California Science Education Conference and is back again by popular demand.
California adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in 2013. These standards prominently feature climate science in K-12 with foundational concepts beginning in the primary grades and increasing in depth and sophistication throughout the grade bands. The Summit is intended to enrich the experience and expertise of teachers by providing opportunities for teachers to strengthen their content knowledge and receive support for teaching climate science as envisioned at their grade-level. The Summit will also include information on how classroom teachers can use resources from informal (out of the classroom) settings to enhance their climate instruction.
The Climate Summit begins with a Pre-Conference Day on Thursday, October 17. The Summit will continue via events embedded into the regular California Science Education Conference schedule. These events include the Opening and Closing Keynote presentations, several focus speakers, one short course highlighting climate literacy and informal science centers, and eight climate-themed short courses featuring grade-specific NGSS-aligned learning sequences that embed California’s Environmental Principles and Concepts.
Intended Audience: The Climate Summit Pre-Conference Day and other Summit events are appropriate for all educators who teach science in a K-12 classroom setting or support or lead implementation of NGSS in their school, district, or county.
